Game Design

I've been flirting with game design since I was little, by way of Sploder and Dungeons & Dragons. I have very little training in game design, but it's now what I do for a living.

The Commons Problem

I am the creator of The Commons Problem, an open-source AI governance Megagame. It's a simulation of the near future of the AI ecosystem for 30-60 people, inspired by exercises like Intelligence Rising, The Endgame, and AI 2027. Unlike most AI tabletop exercises on the market, my game is both mechanically rigorous and open-source so anyone will be able to download the rules and run it themselves.

In The Commons Problem, players are split into Factions— Great Powers, AI Labs, Chip Makers, Investors, et cetera— each with their own set of objectives. Over several rounds of real-time play, the Factions have to manage resources, negotiate with each other, and work towards victory while also being mindful of rising global threats— everything from economic shocks to great power conflict to AI x-risk. Can the world come together to prevent catastrophe? Or will individual incentives lead to a tragedy of the commons?

The Commons Problem is in active development by Automaton Games, supported by British/American nonprofit BlueDot Impact. If you are interested in playing the game or supporting its growth, you can reach the team at hello@thecommonsproblem.com to get in touch.
